Generation of Byproducts Resulting from Ozone Application on Intestinal Parasites in Waste Waters

Abstract: The results of experimental tests using ozone have shown, both in qualitative and in quantitative ways, that intestinal parasites, mainly helminth eggs are destroyed in an hour. In one hour, the destruction of 96.7% of the species Ascaris suum was achieved, a very significant correlation coefficient (r) was obtained (0.95), and a first order kinetic was present. Inactivation time for 90% of the initial population (t90) was 1hour. Preliminary results of the application of ozone in treated wastewater showed the destruction of the above parasites, despite the existence of other ozone consumers. During the oxidation process, ozone breaks the cover of helminth eggs. The acid medium causes hydrolysis of proteins, with amino acids as terminal products. The biphenyls and the quinines are characterized by the presence of the OH donor group on the aromatic nucleus. Amino acid side chains seem to be the main sites that are responsible for the high ozone reactivity in polypeptide structures. Ozonation of amino acids led to the formation of aldehydes such as formaldehyde and, acetaldehyde, plus other compounds such as ammoniac and butanol.
