Abstract: Groundwater rise is a modern and widespread geological process. It is especially dangerous in arid and semi-arid regions with growing water consumption from surface sources in the urban and agricultural areas. In Russia groundwater rise is the most important problem for many towns of the Volga valley. Examination of dynamics of this process shows that there are special characteristics for every site depending on its geological and setting. However there are many common features depended on human activity.
