Abstract: Laminar and turbulent line plumes in stratified fluid are computed to study the Reynolds-number effect on mixing processes. The Reynolds number of the full-scale processes in lakes and oceans are hundred and thousand times greater in magnitude compared with the flows in the laboratory. Computations for the full-scale turbulent plumes are obtained in this paper using Large Eddy Simulation (LES) method. Despite the huge difference in scales, the laminar plume in the stratified fluid is surprisingly similar to the turbulent plumes in full scale.
