Mapping of Floodplain Boundaries Using High Spatial Resolution DEM

Abstract: In this study, we developed an integrated system to simulate Yang Hwa River basin's flood inundation, connecting a hydraulic channel routing model (HEC-Ras) and Geographic Information System (GIS) used for calculating rainfall-runoff model (HEC-1) and the stages of each dischage. In terms of developing the basin's DEM (Digital Elevation Model), we, by composing the low and high spatial resolution, included channels and levees with the low spatial resolution, and reenacted storage phenomena by levees as well. We reenacted flood inundation caused by an imaginary bank break through the developed Floodplain Simulation System. Furthermore, we drew a conclusion that developing a flood inundation map and flooding depth according to each flood stage could be put to practical use for flood prevention measures and establishing evacuation plans.
