Abstract: A hot-film shear stress sensor has been calibrated for similar ranges of shear stresses in two separate facilities. One of the facilities had Reynolds numbers in the laminarturbulent transition regim e; whereas the other had Reynolds numbers well into the turbulent regime. Resulting shear stress calibration curves were similar for both sets of tests. An improved method of correcting shear stress calibrations for variat ions in fluid tempera ture is also given. Finally, it is shown that although in situ calibrations are preferred, careful external calibrations of shear stress sensors can produce good results.
