Abstract: Presented is a procedure combining simulated annealing with BIOPLUME II modeling for optimizing in-situ bioremediation system design. The design object is to minimize system well installation and operation cost. This is the first simulated annealing application to a mixed-integer nonlinear groundwater management problem. The system design satisfies constraints on pumping rates, hydraulic heads, contaminant concentration at the source and at downstream monitoring wells. For a hypothetical case, simulated annealing obtains an optimal solution that minimizes system cost, reduces contaminant concentration and prevents plume migration.
