Abstract: A mixed-integer linear programming model for Soil Vapor Extraction (SVE) was developed by coupling the recently developed three-dimensional air flow simulation model for the unsaturated zone (AIR3D) to an optimization software to obtain optimal design for SVE. The goal of the design is to assure an inward pressure gradient at certain control locations to capture the volatile contaminants and direct the vapor to the extraction wells. Including the installation cost of the wells had an impact on the combination of wells selected for remediating the site. The installation cost was important for the four month remediation time set to clean the site.
