Abstract: The aim of this paper is to present a study on DRASTIC groundwater pollution vulnerability assessment. One of the aims of this European Commission sponsored groundwater project was the application, for the first time in an European Union Member State, in this case Portugal, of an index method that could serve as a non subjective mathematical tool for the assessment of groundwater vulnerability to pollution. The seven DRASTIC parameters, plus the final index, were developed in a Geographical Information System in a 1:500 000 scale, as published in Lobo-Ferreira et al. (1995).
