Abstract: In the irrigated areas of south-eastern Australia, shallow, saline watertables are widespread. In order to better manage both salt export into the river system and soil salinisation, an improved knowledge of the processes of salt transport are required. This paper describes an ongoing field ex periment that is monitoring the various surface and subsurface salt transport processes within an irrigation bay. Detailed continuous monitoring of groundwater behaviour, soil moisture contents and electrical conductivity, climate, irrigation and drain volumes is being undertaken. During irrigation events, overland flow behaviour and electrical conductivity is being measured. Salt transport from the bay during events is a result of both entrainment of precipitated surface salt by overland flow, and exfiltration of groundwater.
