Abstract: A conceptual model approach to groundwater modeling has been implemented in the Department of Defense Groundwater Modeling System (GMS). This new approach to handling human interaction with GMS is based on the engineer or scientist visualizing the hydrogeologic conceptual model on the computer screen and then having the computer develop the numerical model. A single conceptual model is used to generate a variety of groundwater models, both finite-element and finitedifference. The development seeks to drastically increase modeling efficiency and eliminate much of the tedium involved in data entry. Additionally, several different types of numerical models can be developed from a single application to check their results and their applicability to the problem.
