Abstract: In complex water resources systems, with several dams and aquifers and extensive periods of simulation, it is most desirable to have an efficient tool for aquifer simulation. That is particulary true when different planning and management alternatives have to be analyzed. The eigenvalues approach solves the groundwater flow equation explicitly and continuously on time in a very efficient way. Greater efficiency be achieved because in most cases only a few control variables are needed, and the stresses over the aquifer can be expressed by a limited number of basic stresses. The methodology has been integrated in AQUATOOL, a decision support system with several modules. One of the modules, AQUIVAL, solves the eigen problem and preprocesses the results with the initial conditions, basic stresses and control parameter data to obtain a reduced set of vectors and matrices needed for the explicit simulation of the aquifer. It has been applied in several large and complex systems in Spain.
