Abstract: The ADH model for coupled surface water and groundwater flow and transport is designed to be robust for a variety of basin scale hydrologic processes. Unique features of the model include the following: 1) Galerkin/least squares formulation; 2) internal error indication; 3) h-adaptivity; 4) tracking of the lateral free boundary between the flooded and drained portions of the surface flow domain; 5) internal subdomain data structures designed for separate bookkeeping across processors; and 6) implementation within the Groundwater Modeling System graphical user interface.
