Abstract: Dredged material disposal facilities, also known as confined disposal facilities (CDFs), are necessary to store dredged sediments from the nation's waterways. These dredged sediments may be contaminated with toxic chemicals from years of industrial activities that could endanger surface and groundwater drinking water supplies. As a result, regulatory agencies are increasingly requesting the use of 3D numerical groundwater models to determine the impacts of the CDF on surface and groundwater resources. A numerical modeling approach is presented that has proven useful at two Corps of Engineers sites and could be applied at others as well.
