Abstract: Ethanol flushing is a promising, innovative technology for the dissolution or mobilization of nonaqueous phase liquid (NAPL) contaminants. To demonstrate the effectiveness and design limitations of this technology, a series of column experiments in which a residual NAPL (benzene) is recovered by ethanol flushing from a saturated porous medium will be presented. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is utilzed to monitor the displacement processes noninvasively. A three-dimensional, finite difference multiphase flow (water, oil, micellar, vapor), multi-constituent transport model was adapted for cosolvent flushing by incorporating a general, liquid-liquid equilibrium model (UNIQUAC). The numerical model will be demonstrated with simulations of the column experiments and other available data.
