Numerical Modeling of Flow Processes in Capillary Barriers

Abstract: Recently progress has been made on the theoretical study of capillary barriers, which has allowed the derivation of expressions describing the flow patterns of such cover systems. Yet it is unclear if this findings can lead to applicable design criteria. In order to asses the questioning involved in such approaches, experiments have been carried out at different scales: core samples, in a 8 m long flume and on 40 m long test sites. The present contribution will focus on parameter estimation and the numerical simulation of the laboratory experiments.
