Abstract: The findings from an experimental study which investigated in detail the soilwater flow characteristics and patterns are presented. The catchment is reduced to a 14m long model and artificial rainfall are induced using a series of spray nozzles controlled by electromagnetic valves and pressure governors. The spatial & temporal variation of the degree of saturation of the soil strata is calculated by measuring the impedance at very close intervals. Several experiments are performed for uniform & varying rainfall intensities and thereby generalized flow characteristics & patterns within the soil layer have been studied and identified.
