Abstract: With respect to the hydraulic analysis of groundwater flow in fractured impermeable rock formations, the determination of permeability in single fractures and especially in fracture channels is important for the hydraulic behaviour of the whole system. Therefore, a realistic description of resistance laws for viscous channel flow is needed. Common approaches are based on a macroscopic, continuous friction loss description. This study presents numerical results based on the microscopic, so-called single-step model determining hydraulic resistances by taking into account continuous as well as local hydraulic energy loss due to abrupt changes in channel apertures, i.e. for large Reynolds Numbers. Although often neglected it is shown that the latter energy loss is principally important for quantitative permeability determination of channels.
