Abstract: In this paper, a semi-analytical solution is used to study the advection-diffusionsorption process in liner systems that are designed to reduce the contaminant migration from landfills. Particular attention is paid on the potential impact of fractures which are found in highly compressible and brittle clays in the Valley of Mexico. It is shown the usefulness of transport analysis in selecting cost-effective engineered schemes for remediation of fractured natural barrier. Some multidisciplinary tasks for hydraulic and geotechnical engineers are also outlined.
