Abstract: Short-term water level fluctuations at the coast may have significant implications for groundwater management applications and waste disposal at the coast-line. We present numerical solutions to this problem including the effects of a realistic mild beach slope and a seepage-face and taking into account the unsaturated zone. In this first stage of the investigation however, the higher density of sea water is not included. The consequences of tidal fluctuation of sea water on the flow pattern in a hypothetical aquifer are presented. Although the system has not reached the final equilibrium or cyclic steady-state, results illustrate that the tidal fluctuation has a significant effect on the water table and velocity fields which will govern contaminant movement in the immediate vicinity of the shore-line. Also it is shown that for this case the seepage face is quite important and neglecting it causes errors in the position of the water table inside the aquifer.
