Abstract: The energy losses within well systems are rarely considered in groundwater flow and transport models. However, frictional and momentum losses in a well string can have a significant influence on aquifer flow distribution local to these systems. This, in turn, can significantly influence the mixing of waters within the well and the apparent concentration of contaminants at the discharge outlet. This paper explores the influence of such energy losses and outlines the mathematical and numerical framework for the well hydraulics model, T_WELL, which forms part of the TRACE flow and transport modelling system. The modelling system has been developed to resolve the complex flow behaviours in fissured-porous aquifers such as the UK Chalk. Illustrative results of the impact of the local energy losses on inflow distribution is presented.
