Abstract: An organizer of this meeting invited me to speak here after reading "The Control Room of the Future". a series of articles that Jery Stedinger and I wrote for the trade magazine, Hydro Review. These were fanciful pieces that grew out of a challenge from the sponsor of a Hydro Research forum held in 1 992. The challenge stretched the limits of our academically trained imagination. One of the organizers of today's conference thought that I might stimulate research into areas you otherwise might not think to explore. He might know that the Hydro Review articles are not all that fanciful. Some of the ideas that Jery and I thought were far out science fiction became established fact, even before the articles were published
