Abstract: In spillways with low tailwater levels, the hydraulic jump may not occur on the protected river bed which could result in severe local scour and could endanger the safety of the dam. A traditional solution is to place crushed rock in the scour hole in an attem pt to prevent further scour; however, this method is not a permanent solution. In this research the efect, on the scour profile, of installing a secondary stilin g basin downstream of an inadequate primary basin is investigated. The primary stilling basin is retained while the secondary stilling basin (S. S. B) provides for the additional energy dissipation required to prevent excessive scouring in the river bed. This study considered the sensitivity of the scour profile to the tailwater level and end sill slope in the presence of the S. S. B. It was found that a flatter end sill reduced the plunging effect of the flow leaving the S. S. B and reduced the scour depth.
