Abstract: Friant Dam is a principal storage feature of the Central Valley Project and is located on the San Joaquin River approximately 20 miles north of Fresno, California. The dam is a concrete gravity structure with a structural height of 319 feet and a crest length of 3,488 feet. The dam was completed in 1942, and reservoir filling commenced in February 1944. The dam serves many purposes including storage and diversion of water for irrigation, flood control, power generation, and recreation. The spillway consists of an ogee-shaped overflow section, chute and stilling basin at the center of the dam. Discharges are controlled by three 100-foot-wide by 18-foot-high drum gates. The crest is at elevation 560 feet and the top of the gates, when raised (closed), is at elevatior 578 feet. The capacity of the spillway at normal reservoir elevation 578 feet is 83,000 ft^3/s.
