Overtopping Breaching of Noncohesive Embankment Dams

Abstract: Model studies of the overtopping failure of homogeneous embankment dams of cohesionless fill are presented. Observations are made in relation to breach channel profile, breach development, erosion processes and breach discharge. Equations are presented to describe discharge through the breach as a function of the breach crest length and the head on the breach crest as the breach develops.
