Abstract: The layout and design of hydropower intake structures, spillw ays and bottom outlets is important to ensure the function of structures and installations endangered by sedimentation. Contamination of reservoir sediments is becoming an environmental issue requiring immission oriented sediment management strategies which will be addressed. Different structural and operational options for sedim entation mitigation are described such as flow guiding elements, levee raising, sediment flushing by water level lowering, flushing enhancement by pilot channel and sediment dredging. Practical problems wil be illustrated by case studies and specific solutions found by physical and numerical modelling will be presented.
