Abstract: Reservoir emptying is compulsory in France, for safety reasons. It requires an impact study to foresee the consequences of the emptying for all the potential users of water and to mitigate these consequences. A study methodology has been developed at EDF to answer these requirements. It includes estimate of the amount of deposited sediments, measures of physical and mechanical properties of the sediment, prediction of erosion during emptying and design of remedial devices. After the description of the physical phenomena involved in such operations, an example on the Durance river highlights the methodology.
