Abstract: Close to 37 reservoirs (middle and great size) are now in operation in Algeria. Some of them are in need of silt clearance Different techniques of desiltation have been used in Algeria, however, the dredging method remains the most employed. The objective of this paper is to examine the dredging operation undertaken in the Fergug reservoir. This operation is called Prototype Project. The informations obtained will serve as a database for the desilting of other reservoirs in operation. The dredge that was used is a De Groot Nijkerk, Dutch brand. The desilting project was at the start assigned to the Dutch Company H. A. M. The dredging have begun in September, 1989and stopped in March, 1990 (6 months). After one year stop, the Algerian Company of Maritime Works (SO. NA. TRA. M) has resumed the dredging works from March, 1991until March, 1992 (12 months). The useful capacity has passed from2 (siltation of90%) to9millions of cubic meters (siltation of 50%). However, the desilting procedures by dredging of reservoirs are often very costly, specially for developing countries: the desilted cubic meter cost 14.53 Algerian Dinars (▲) including equipement (materials) and about 52% of water is utilized for 48% of extracted silt. So, the problem must be attacked at the origin to preserve the lands against erosion and to reduce the sediment transport, making then the reservoir last longer.
