Abstract: The paper deals with sediment deposition in buffer basins at peak energy producing hydropower plants. A principle superimposing a spiral-shaped forced vortex with the spiral flow in a bend is introduced. The principle is used to stimulate sediment deposition at defined locations in buffer basins. The basic hydraulic laws are analysed and the governing parameters are identified. Experience with model studies for two basins where the principle has been applied succesfully is used as basis for further fundamental investigation.
