Abstract: The discharge of the biggest Austrian glacier, called Pasterze, is stored in the Margaritze reservoir. This reservoir and the two reservoirs of the powerstation Glockner-Kaprun are connected with a pressure tunnel. Because of the abrasion of the glacier the sediment rate of the Margaritze-inflow is very high. The reservoir has little sediment storage capacity because of the small gross storage. Flushing by opening the bottom outlet is very problematic, therefore we were looking for the possibilities to transfer sediment to the much bigger reservoirs at Glockner-Kaprun using the pressure tunnel. The solution presented in this paper is the sediment management of suspended sediment load including the following steps: A sand trap, that is designed to create the flow processes required to eliminate from the delivery flow all the grain sizes above a certain diameter, and only these. To transfer the suspended sediment through the 11.6 km long pressure tunnel we had to consider different studies for practicable service instructions. Basic facts of suspended load transport and the investigation of various operating conditions combined with sediment ratio-measurement on both ends of the pressure tunnel made sure, that sediments of different fractions can pass the tunnel without any risk of deposition.
