Abstract: A study has been made on the use of Riemann based methods to solve the Saint Venant equations of open channel flow. Different Riemann solvers have been ap-plied to the dam-break problem including explicit and implicit formulations. It was observed that for this particular test case, the method that best dealt with in-creasing reservoir/tailwater depth ratio's (leading to higher Froude numbers) was that due to Roe. For smaller depth ratio's the methods tested performed equally well. Comparisons between explicit and implicit versions of Roe's scheme showed that whilst higher CFL numbers were obtainable using the implicit method, there was a cost of having to use a more complex numerical algorithm and smearing of the solution occurred at steep gradients.
