Abstract: Oregon Inlet is the northernnost inlet along the Outer Banks of North Carolina The inlet was opened in 1846 by a severe storm and, after closing, it reopened in 1864. The inlet is very dynamic and its configuration is constantly changing Shoals and spits grow and erode very quickly. Historically, the inlet has ranged in width from 640 m (2,100 feet) to 2,030 m (6,670 feet), but has generally maintained a main channel (gorge) depth of 9 m (30 feet). Generally, the trend is for the inlet to narrow during periods of low storm activity and widen after large storms.
