Abstract: Irrigation generally increases yields by 100% to 400%, and is expected to account for one half to two thirds of required increases in food production in the next few decades A World Bank/UNDP study estimates that irrigation could be extended to an additional 1 10 million hectares to provide sufficient grain for 1.5 to 2.0 billion people. But this accelerating demand for irrigation will coincide with a rising concern for the environment and increasing economic competition for water. The convergence of these conflicting pressures which will force fundamental changes in irrigation practices, and those changes will probably include abandoning the most basic of traditional irrigation objectives, the objective of satisfying crop water demand.
