Abstract: The outflow gate motion of a reservoir is optimized to respond to an incoming flood wave. A gate motion which prevents both overtopping of a dam and downstream flooding is determined. A quasi-Newton method is used for optimization, and an adjoint equation method is used to compute the sensitivities needed for control. The adjoint equation approach allows sensitivities to be computed efficiently and accu-rately.
