Abstract: Very often the understanding of processes in nature and environment can be improved by considering from a probabilistic point of view. In the present paper, statistical methods of hydraulic design are proposed. Three examples are presented: a stilling basin, flood protection at a river and freeboard at a dam. It was the aim to make calculations at a reasonable effort. According to the opinion of the author, the results obtained are more convincing than in the calculation of individual values resulting from definite load cases. In future, it will be necessary to lay down limiting values for permissible probabilities of failure.
