Abstract: The paper outlines the basic principles of an individual-based modelling approach in aquatic ecology. The advantages and disadvantages of this novel approach are briefly outlined and contrasted with more classical approaches. The approach and model described here constitute a demonstration of DHI's ongoing ECCO (ECological COnsequence) project.
