Abstract: A numerical model of sediment sorting in meandering rivers is presented. In natural rivers, the spatial distribution of sediment mean size, along with that of the flow field and bed topography, is intimately tied to channel curvature. Coarser sediment, for example, tends to move along the inner bank upstream of the bend apex, and then crosses to the outer bank near the apex. This tendency for local spatial segregation of grain sizes of heterogeneous sediments is known as sediment sorting.
