Abstract: This paper deals with the interm ediatezone between the jet and plum e stages of a subm er ged buoyant d ischarge from sea outfall in current. The stability criteria, plum e width and height after the intermediatezone a nd the dilution within the intermediateregion have been studied theoretically and experim entally. The stud y indicates that a stable upstreamwed ge may be existed w hen the densim etricalFroude number (F_△) is less than 0.45, an unstable wedge is likely to appear when F_△ is between 0.45~1.0, and no upstreamw edge exists once F_△ is greater than 1.0; the plume height and width could be readily estimated and finally the dilution in the intermediatezone is found to be insignificant.
