Abstract: In this paper we report one part of a study concerned with solute dispersion in an open channel with a rough bed. The project is designed to investigate solute transport over a rigid bed containing holes or dead zones, and aims to allow a mechanistic interpretation of observed longitudinal dispersion in terms of the major advective and mixing mechanisms. The channel bed was designed to reproduce better the sort of dead zones found in rivers than had previously been possible with a gravel bed. The present paper focusses on measurements of the primary flow field and longitudinal turbulence intensities. The aims are to define the hydrodynamic characteristics of the flow in the channel and to compare them with established open channel flow hydraulics.
