Abstract: Vegetation is the most cost-effective form of erosion control. Since vegetation preventserosion, the relationship between vegetation and erosion rate in vegetated open channels has been highlighted and analyzed. The deformation of vegetation caused by the flow's momentum has been taken into consideration. We obtain results that are in good agreement with the experimental erosion rate data for vegetated channels. The purpose of this paper is to show that the force equilibrium method is an acceptable method to estimate the tractive stress on the bed of vegetated channels and therefore to estimate the erosion rate, and that the amount of deformation of a vegetative channel lining due to flow is also a useful method to determine the erosion rate.
