Abstract: The velocity field of lake Saint-Pierre, a partial lake and river system, is calculatedusingan elementary two-dimensionalmethod for thefirst approximation of the stream function based on the numerical computation of friction-dominated flow. Precision of the results is obtained by putting emphasis on the determ ination of the significant variables, i.e. water depth and friction using extended computer resources. A very high resolution grid is generated in order to counterbalance the degree of approximation introduced as well as to provide an appropriate graphical frame for the determination of the streamlines. The comparison of results with measurements and with another, more refined, type of modelling confirms the validity of the method.
