Abstract: Hydraulic characteristics of unsteady flows were investigated experimentally in a rectangular open channel with symmetrical flood plains using a computer-controlled water supply system. Some noticeable features of unsteady flow structure in compound channels were revealed which were significantly different from those in single cross-sectional rectangular channels. When the unsteadiness is very large, the velocity and bed shear stress in the main channel becomes much larger in the rising stage than that expected from the steady flow. When the unsteadiness is mild, the main-channel velocity decreases by the effects of developed mixing between the main-channel and flood-plain flows.
