Abstract: A full scale flume-mounted model of a typical formed recess in a segmentally lined tunnel was instrumented and flush-mounted in the false bed of a hydraulic test channel. For prototype values of flow velocities, dynamometric measurements were made of the form drag induced by the flow on such an individual recess in order to integrate its contribution to the hydraulic flow resistance of an entire segmentally lined tunnel with (unfilled) recesses. These results obviated possible scale effects implied in the parallel scale-model tests (separately reported on) or the need for costly full-scale tunnel tests. Investigations were also made regarding the mutual influence of two and three such recesses in line, in order to establish whether any interference, and hence any additional cumulative effects due to the regularity of the repeating pattern of recesses, would take place.
