Abstract: A formula for the threshold velocity of sand mixtures is presented based on the following considerations. A small number of particles with the same size are at the threshold of motion. The local velocity acting on these particles is affected by nearby sands with the size d_ (95). The shade and exposure effects are taken into account by assuming that the river bed consists of uniform sands with the mean diameter of the mixture. A formula for threshold velocity for uniform bed load is also obtained as uniform bed load is a simple case of the mixture. Both formulae are tested against experimental and field data and good agreement achieved.
