Abstract: Natural convection in rectangular cavities has been extensively studied experimentally and numerically, see e.g. Ostrach (1982), Nobile et al. (1989). Most of the reported work was focused on the laminar regime with differentially heated isothermal vertical walls and for low aspect ratios up to 10. It has been shown that the specification of the Rayleigh number Ra, Prandtl number Pr, aspect ratio and angle of inclination fully defines the problem when the Boussinesq approximation is invoked. For the case of variable fluid properties, more parameters are required to specify the problem. Marcatos & Pericleous (1984) presented 2D time- averaged steady-state computations for the buoyancy-driven laminar and turbulent flow and heat transfer in a square cavity of aspect ratio 1 with differentially heated side walls.
