Abstract:

Water is known as the blue gold, a precious and limited resource to be preserved and carefully used. On the other hand, water may be too much, determining calamitous events which endanger people and valuables. National and international legislations put increasing emphasis on monitoring, maintaining, and improving the water environment by means of better planning and management, which in turn requires much more accurate knowledge of the impact of mankind on the environment, and vice versa. Hydraulic instrumentation and experimentation play a key role for understanding fundamental processes that affect the health of aquatic ecosystems, the safe use of water supply sources and hydro-environmental hazards. Wider use of new technology in the water sector and access to water-related data can facilitate the implementation of specific measures. Modelling software tools are now becoming universally used by organizations responsible for managing the water environment and this, in turn, requires more detailed and more accurate data. At the same time, thanks to the rapid developments in sensor technology, large quantities of data can be available, calling for structured and robust methods of analysis. A rapidly expanding variety of different software tools and data collection tools are becoming available for these purposes. After the first edition which took place in Madrid in 2017, HydroSenSoft – International Symposium and Exhibition on Hydro-Environment Sensors and Software gathers users, researchers and developers interested in hydro-environment software and sensors/instrumentation to acquire, analyze and use data for our better understanding of the hydro-environment, with an aim at reducing the gap between the public, academic, and private sectors. The Symposium and Exhibition event showcases the latest advances of the research and development community, and share experience from practice. The international Symposium is organized by the IAHR Technical Committee on Experimental Methods and Instrumentation (EMI-TC), and is structured along three main themes that reflect the Committee areas of action: Experimentation, Experimental methods, and Applications and Case-studies. The symposium also includes a special session on the emerging use of unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) in hydro-environment research. The success of the Symposium depends on the proactive effort of organizers and participants. The Leadership Team of the EMI-TC designed the meeting together with the IAHR office in Madrid which implemented the decisions and maintained the contacts with all the stakeholders. Several international experts accepted to be included in the International Scientific Committee and performed abstract and manuscript review. A total of 48 abstracts was received from 17 countries, the final schedule comprehending 35 oral or poster presentations. Three knowledgeable Keynote Speakers provide their experience-based view on the core topics. IFEMA provided the premises for the conference venue and several sponsors supported the event. All these contributors are gratefully acknowledged.
