Abstract: The distribution and transport of frazil ice under ice cover is one important research topic of river ice hydraulics. In the study, the theory of multiphase fluid has been used. By considering frazil ice particles as pseudo-fluid as well as the boundary conditions in the vicinity of bridge pier, a three dimensional k-ε mathematical model has been established in this study. Numerical simulation on frazil ice concentration under ice cover in the vicinity of bridge pier has been conducted under different conditions such as upstream flow velocity, grain size of frazil ice particle and frazil ice concentration in water. Results indicate that the size of zone of frazil ice concentration near bridge pier will be significantly enlarged if the flow velocity increases. On the other side, the changes in frazil ice grain size and incoming frazil ice concentration cannot cause significantly influence the size of zone of frazil ice concentration near bridge pier. Results also show that, with the increase in frazil ice grain size and incoming frazil ice concentration, the impacts on the upper layer of the fluid downstream of the bridge pier will be decreased.
