Abstract: A series of model tests in ice for a ship equipped with twin podded propulsors was made at the ice model basin of National Maritime Research Institute. A tactile sensor system was used to measure local ice loads on the model. The model was tested in a free-running mode. Turning tests as well as straight-going tests were performed. In the straight-going test local ice load was dominant in the forward region of the model. In the turning test significant ice loading occurred in the aft-ship region. The load in the aft-ship region increased with the increase of lateral force of the pods.
