Abstract: In the region of Hokkaido, ice problems have occurred in the hydroelectric power stations. While we have investigated frazil ice formation processes, we have developed ice control methods to prevent frazil slush from entering the water intakes. Based on field observations in the Penke-niupu River, we verified the usefulness of a freestanding “ice fence”. Since first installed in 1991, the ice fence has reduced frequent interruptions to power production resulting from frazil accumulations at the intake. In this paper, various type ice control methods, air bubblers, booms, jetty-type weirs besides the ice fence for hydro power stations of the Hokkaido Electric Power Co., Inc. (HEPCO) are discussed.
