Abstract: Bayangaole reach sits at the upstream of Irmer Mongolia reach of the Yellow River. Since 1986, almost every winter, ice jams have been formed and the disasters were serious at this reach. In this paper, the variations of hydraulic factors, thermal factors and the boundary conditions of the charmel since 1986 were analyzed in detail, and the reasons and conditions of the formation of ice jams were studied. by applying ice mechanical theory, the mechanism of the formation of ice jams at Bayangaole reach was also studied.
