Abstract: It is very important to secure steady and abundant energy resources for a long time, since Japan is poor in natural resources. The oil exploration in cold regions and icy waters in the Arctic CirCle, will become more significant to Japan. In these circumstances, Japan Ocean Industries Association (lOlA) planned the research project, "Study on Ice Load Acting on Marine Structures", which is funded by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry. The research project was started in 1993 in the scheme of 5 years. The main purpose of this research project is the development of ice load prediction methods and numerical simulation techniques for ice - structure interaction. Sub tasks of this study are as follows: (1) Observation of failure mode of ice and understanding of the relation between global ice load and nonsimultaneous local ice pressure through the ice tank tests and the field tests. (2) Development of analytical simulation methods for ice-structure interactions concerning vertical and inclined structures. This report presents the outline of this research project and the summary of results in the early stage.
